📌 Here’s an explanation of this graphic (for those of you who haven’t read Anathem):
The Pythagorean theorem has always existed in the eternal realm, it just wasn’t until the 6th century BCE when us humans discovered it. Before us, it was probably discovered many times over (by aliens around the universe who preceded us).
1. (Platonic → Physical): Mathematics underlies the physical world. The laws of physics are written in math, and the universe seems to obey mathematical structures.
2. (Physical → Mental): The physical world gives rise to the mental world. Our brains are physical objects that somehow produce consciousness and thought.
3. (Mental → Platonic): The mental world accesses the Platonic world. Humans can discover mathematics through thought and intuition, as if “tapping into” an eternal realm.
