Here’s a bit of an explanation:
Basically we have 29 different questions people answered on a Likert scale (totally disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, totally agree). So if people differed a lot on their answers across topics, it means high variance, which means high polarization (higher on the y-axis). It doesn’t necessarily mean left or right divide but more divided across issues.
