100 Years of Movie Genres, AI Enables the Fastest Growing App of All Time, Nuclear Power in China vs Germany
CHARTED: The Rise and Fall of Movie Genres
Guy charted film genre popularity over time as a percentage of all films released that year:
Two takeaways:
1) Feels like comedy movies dropped off big time fifteen years ago. Surprising to see them holding strong.
2) Sci-fi is the best, but very expensive to make. Hoping to see a big spike in sci-fi movies over the next 2-20 years as gen AI gets better.

The Fastest Growing App of All Time?
Box CEO Aaron Levie posted a pretty dope graphic yesterday.
Highly recommend following Aaron Levie on Twitter if you aren’t already. He’s smart and cool and surprisingly candid for a CEO of big publicly traded company.
China Likes Building Nuclear Plants, Not So Much in Germany
In the 1990’s, Nuclear energy accounted for 30% of Germany’s energy production. Today, it is 0%. Germany shut down their last nuclear plant in 2023.
China, on the other hand, now has 55 nuclear plants along with 22 more in construction.

A different redditor responded by posting this graphic. Interestingly, it doesn’t look like such a big bump when you look at it as a percentage of total energy consumption.
Why did Germany shut down all their nuclear plants?
Fukushima
Chernobyl
Long-term storage concerns
Transition to wind, solar, and hydro
Makes sense but I don’t know if it’s worth the trade-offs.
